You are here

There’s no freedom quite like the freedom to drive wherever you want to go, whenever you want. Both the theory element and the practical assessment can be tricky to get right first time, and learner drivers need all the help they can get, along with a little bit of good fortune. Passing quickly not only saves you time but can also save you a lot of money. Here are some top tips to get you on the road in no time.

  1. Choose where you take your test

Pass rates in your area will likely be different to those in other areas, sometimes wildly. In fact, figures from Statista show a huge fluctuation in pass rates, from 80% in parts of Scotland to just 28% in Belvedere, London. It pays to do your homework, so if your area isn’t too fruitful, see if you can travel a short distance and you could benefit from it in the long-run.

  1. Ask questions… all the time

That’s what driving instructors are there for. If there’s something you’re not sure about, ask away. If you are told not to do something, question why shouldn’t. With sound explanation, you’re much more likely to remember it to ensure you don’t make the same mistake in the test.

  1. Go over your theory before the practical

After passing your theory, many learners don’t bother returning to bank of theoretical knowledge they’ve picked up. Refresh your knowledge by regularly returning to your books or DVDs, as it could well refresh something you’ve forgotten.

  1. Know why people fail and how to avoid them

If you know how to fail, you know how to pass. Watch videos on regular ways people fail so you know what to look out for in the test. If you know you’re not great with a particular aspect of driving, ask your instructor to focus on this and do extra work to hone those skills.

  1. Keep calm and think confidently

This is harder than you think. Remember though, by the time you come to take your test, your driving instructor is a qualified professional and genuinely thinks you will pass. Having confidence in yourself will help to calm you, leaving you in good stead in the test. Take your instructor on the test with you if it helps. Even if you do something rash while on your test, don’t panic, don’t assume you’ve already failed and calmly continue until the end.
